دُعَاؤُهُ إِذَا حَزَنَهُ أَمْرٌ When Something made him Sorrowful

O God, O Sufficer of the isolated and weak and Protector against terrifying affairs!

أَللَّهُمَّ يَا كَافِيَ الْفَرْدِ الضَعِيْفِ، وَوَاقِيَ الامْرِ الْمَخُوْفِ،

Offenses have isolated me, so there is none to be my companion.

أَفْرَدَتْنِي الْخَـطَايَا; فَـلاَ صَاحِبَ مَعِي،

I am too weak for Thy wrath and there is none to strengthen me.

وَضَعُفْتُ عَنْ غَضَبِكَ; فَلاَ مُؤَيِّدَ لِي،

I have approached the terror of meeting Thee and there is none to still my fear.

وَأَشْرَفْتُ عَلَى خَوْفِ لِقَائِكَ; فَلاَ مُسَكِّنَ لِرَوْعَتِي،

Who can make me secure from Thee when Thou hast filled me with terror?

وَمَنْ يُؤْمِنُنِي مِنْكَ وَأَنْتَ أَخَفْتَنِي؟

Who can come to my aid when Thou hast isolated me?

وَمَن يساعِدُنِي وَأَنْتَ أَفْرَدْتَنِي؟

Who can strengthen me when Thou hast weakened me?

وَمَنْ يُقَوِّيْنِي وَأَنْتَ أَضْعَفْتَنِي؟

None can grant sanctuary to a vassal, my God, but a lord,

لاَ يُجيرُ يا إلهي إلاّ رَبٌّ عَلَى مَرْبُوب،

none can give security to one dominated but a dominator,

وَلاَ يُؤْمِنُ إلاّ غالِبٌ عَلَى مَغْلُوب،

none can aid him from whom demands are made but a demander.

وَلاَ يُعِينُ إِلاّ طالِبٌ عَلَى مَطْلُوب،

In Thy hand, my God, is the thread of all that, in Thee the place of escape and flight,

وَبِيَـدِكَ يَـاَ إلهِي جَمِيعُ ذلِكَ السَّبَبِ، وَإلَيْكَ الْمَفَرُّ وَالْمَهْربُ.

so bless Muhammad and his Household,

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

give sanctuary to me in my flight, and grant my request!

وَأَجِرْ هَرَبِي وَأَنْجِحْ مَطْلَبِي.

O God, if Thou shouldst turn Thy generous face away from me,

أللَّهُمَّ إنَّكَ إنْ صَرَفْتَ عَنِّي وَجْهَكَ الْكَرِيْمَ،

withhold from me Thy immense bounty,

أَوْ مَنَعْتَنِي فَضْلَكَ الْجَسِيمَ،

forbid me Thy provision, or cut off from me Thy thread,

أَوْ حَظَرْتَ عَلَيَّ رِزْقَكَ أَوْ قَطَعْتَ عَنِّي سَبَبَـكَ

I will find no way to anything of my hope other than Thee

لَمْ أَجِدِ السَّبِيـلَ إلَى شَيْء مِنْ أَمَلِي غَيْرَكَ،

nor be given power over what is with Thee through another's aid, for I am Thy servant

وَلَمْ أَقْدِرْ عَلَى مَا عِنْدَكَ بِمَعُونَةِ سِوَاكَ; فَإنِّي عَبْدُكَ،

and in Thy grasp; my forelock is in Thy hand. I have no command along with Thy command.

وَفِي قَبْضَتِكَ نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، لاَ أَمْرَ لِي مَعَ أَمْرِكَ،

'Accomplished is Thy judgement of me, just Thy decree for me!'

مَاض فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ،

I have not the strength to emerge from Thy authority

وَلاَ قُوَّةَ لِي عَلَى الْخُـرُوجِ مِنْ سُلْطَانِـكَ،

nor am I able to step outside Thy power.

وَلاَ أَسْتَطِيـعُ مُجَاوَزَةَ قُدْرَتِكَ،

I cannot win Thy inclination, arrive at Thy good pleasure,

وَلاَ أَسْتَـمِيلُ هَوَاكَ، وَلاَ أبْلُغُ رِضَاكَ،

or attain what is with Thee except through obeying Thee and through the bounty of Thy mercy.

وَلاَ أَنَالُ مَا عِنْدَكَ إلاَّ بِطَاعَتِكَ وَبِفَضْل رَحْمَتِكَ.

O God, I rise in the morning and enter into evening as Thy lowly slave.

إلهِي أَصْبَحْتُ وَأَمْسَيْتُ عَبْداً دَاخِراً لَكَ،

I own no profit and loss for myself except through Thee.

لا أَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِي نَفْعاً وَلاَ ضَرّاً إلاَّ بِكَ

I witness to that over myself and I confess to the frailty of my strength and the paucity of my stratagems.

أَشْهَدُ بِذَلِكَ عَلَى نَفْسِي وَأَعْتَـرِفُ بِضَعْفِ قُـوَّتِي وَقِلَّةِ حِيْلَتِي

So accomplish what Thou hast promised me and complete for me what Thou hast given me,

فَأَنْجزْ لِي مَا وَعَدْتَنِي، وَتَمِّمْ لِي مَا آتَيْتَنِي;

for I am Thy slave, miserable, abased, frail,

فَإنِّي عَبْـدُكَ الْمِسْكِينُ الْمُسْتكِينُ الضَّعِيفُ

distressed, vile, despised, poor, fearful, and seeking sanctuary!

الضَّـرِيـرُ الذَّلِيلُ الْحَقِيرُ الْمَهِينُ الْفَقِيرُ الْخَائِفُ الْمُسْتَجِيرُ.

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

and let me not forget to remember Thee in what Thou hast done for me,

وَلاَ تَجْعَلْنِي نَاسِيَاً لِذِكْرِكَ فِيمَا أَوْلَيْتَنِي،

be heedless of Thy beneficence in Thy trying me,

وَلاَ غافِلاً لإحْسَانِكَ فِيمَا أَبْلَيْتَنِي،

or despair of Thy response to me, though it keep me waiting,

وَلا آيسَاً مِنْ إجَابَتِكَ لِي وَإنْ أَبْطَأتَ عَنِّي

whether I be in prosperity or adversity, hardship or ease,

فِي سَرَّاءَ كُنْتُ أَوْ ضَرَّاءَ، أَوْ شِدَّة أَوْ رَخَاء،

well-being or affliction, misery or comfort,

أَوْ عَافِيَة أَوْ بَلاء، أَوْ بُؤْس أَوْ نَعْمَاءَ،

wealth or distress, poverty or riches!

أَوْ جِدَة أَوْ لأوَاءَ، أَوْ فَقْر أَوْ غِنىً.

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

make me laud Thee, extol Thee,

وَاجْعَلْ ثَنائِي عَلَيْكَ وَمَدْحِي إيَّاكَ

and praise Thee in all my states

وَحَمْدِي لَكَ فِي كُلِّ حَالاَتِي

so that I rejoice not over what Thou givest me of this world

حَتَّى لاَ أَفْرَحَ بِمَا آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الدُّنْيَا،

nor sorrow over that of it which Thou withholdest from me!

وَلاَ أَحْـزَنَ عَلَى مَا مَنَعْتَنِي فِيهَا،

Impart reverential fear of Thee to my heart,

وَأَشْعِرْ قَلْبِي تَقْوَاكَ،

employ my body in that which Thou acceptest from me,

وَاسْتَعْمِلْ بَدَنِي فِيْمَا تَقْبَلُهُ مِنِّي،

and divert my soul through obedience to Thee from all that enters upon me,

وَاشْغَلْ بِطَاعَتِكَ نَفْسِي عَنْ كُلِّ مَايَرِدُ عَلَىَّ

so that I love nothing that displeases Thee

حَتَّى لاَ اُحِبَّ شَيْئَاً مِنْ سُخْطِكَ،

and become displeased at nothing that pleases Thee!

وَلا أَسْخَطَ شَيْئـاً مِنْ رِضَـاكَ.

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

empty my heart for Thy love, occupy it with remembering Thee,

وَفَرِّغْ قَلْبِي لِمَحَبَّتِكَ ، وَاشْغَلْهُ بِذِكْرِكَ،

animate it with fear of Thee and quaking before Thee,

وَانْعَشْهُ بِخَوْفِكَ ، وَبِالْوَجَلِ مِنْكَ،

strengthen it with beseeching Thee, incline it to Thy obedience,

وَقَوِّهِ بِالرَّغْبَةِ إلَيْكَ، وَأَمِلْهُ إلَى طَاعَتِكَ،

set it running in the path most beloved to Thee,

وَأَجْرِ بِهِ فِي أَحَبِّ السُّبُلِ إلَيْكَ،

and subdue it through desire for what is with Thee all the days of my life!

وَذَلِّلْهُ بِالرَّغْبَةِ فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ أَيَّامَ حَيَاتِي كُلِّهَا،

Let my provision in this world be reverential fear of Thee (ref. 2:197),

وَاجْعَلْ تَقْوَاكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا زَادِي،

my journey be toward Thy mercy, and my entrance be into Thy good pleasure!

وَإلَى رَحْمَتِكَ رِحْلَتِي، وَفِي مَرْضَاتِكَ مَدْخَلِي.

Appoint for me a lodging in Thy Garden,

وَاجْعَلْ فِي جَنَّتِكَ مَثْوَايَ،

give me strength to bear everything that pleases Thee,

وَهَبْ لِي قُوَّةً أَحْتَمِلُ بِهَا جَمِيعَ مَرْضَاتِكَ،

make me flee to Thee and desire what is with Thee,

وَاجْعَلْ فِرَارِي إلَيْكَ، وَرَغْبَتِي فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ،

clothe my heart in estrangement from the evil among Thy creatures,

وَأَلْبِسْ قَلْبِي الْوَحْشَةَ مِنْ شِرارِ خَلْقِكَ.

and give me intimacy with Thee, Thy friends, and those who obey Thee!

وَهَبْ لِي الأُنْسَ بِكَ وَبِأَوْلِيَـآئِكَ وَأَهْلِ طَاعَتِكَ،

Assign to no wicked person or unbeliever a kindness toward me

وَلاَ تَجْعَلْ لِـفَاجِـر وَلا كَافِر عَلَيَّ مِنَّةً،

or a hand that obliges me, nor to me a need for one of them!

وَلاَ لَـهُ عِنْدِي يَداً، وَلا بِي إلَيْهِمْ حَاجَةً،

Rather make the stillness of my heart, the comfort of my soul,

بَل اجْعَـلْ سُكُـونَ قَلْبِي وَاُنْسَ نَفْسِي

my independence and my sufficiency lie in Thee and the best of Thy creatures!

وَاسْتِغْنَـائِي وَكِفَايَتِي بِكَ وَبِخِيَـارِ خَلْقِكَ.

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ،

make me their comrade, make me their helper,

وَاجْعَلْنِي لَهُمْ قَـرِيناً، وَاجْعَلْنِي لَهُمْ نَصِيْراً،

and oblige me with yearning for Thee and doing for Thee what Thou lovest and approvest!

وَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ بِشَوْق إلَيْكَ، وَبِالْعَمَلِ لَكَ بِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَى

"Thou art powerful over everything" (3:26)

إنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ،

and that is easy for Thee.

وَذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ .
