دُعَاءالتَّوْبَةDu’aa al-Tawbah This is Imam Zayn al-Abideen’s Supplication in mentioning and asking for repentance. 1 In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِِ 1 2 O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّد 2 3 O God, O He whom the depiction of the describers fails to describe! اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ لاَ يَصِفُهُ نَعْتُ الْوَاصِفِينَ 3 4 O He beyond whom passes not the hope of the hopers! وَيَا مَنْ لاَ يُجَاوِزُهُ رَجَاءُ الرَّاجِينَ 4 5 O He with whom is not lost the wage of the good-doers! وَيَا مَنْ لاَ يَضِيعُ لَدَيْهِ أَجْرُ الْمُحْسِنِينَ 5 6 O He who is the ultimate object of the fear of the worshipers! وَيَا مَنْ هُوَ مُنْتَهَى خَوْفِ الْعَابِدِيْنَ 6 7 O He who is the utmost limit of the dread of the god-fearing! وَيَا مَنْ هُوَ غَايَةُ خَشْيَةِ الْمُتَّقِينَ 7 8 This is the station of him whom sins have passed from hand to hand. هَذا مَقَامُ مَنْ تَدَاوَلَتْهُ أَيْدِي الذُّنُوبِ 8 9 Offenses' reins have led him on وَقَادَتْهُ أَزِمَّةُ الْخَطَايَا 9 10 And Satan has gained mastery over him. وَاسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ 10 11 He fell short of what Thou hast commanded through neglect فَقَصَّرَ عَمَّا أَمَرْتَ بِهِ تَفْرِيطَاًِ 11 12 And he pursued what Thou hast prohibited in delusion وَتَعَاطى مَا نَهَيْتَ عَنْهُ تَغْرِيراًَ 12 13 Like one ignorant of Thy power over him كَالْجاهِلِ بِقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَيْهِِ 13 14 Or one who denies the bounty of Thy beneficence toward him أَوْ كَالْمُنْكِرِ فَضْلَ إحْسَانِكَ إلَيْهِِ 14 15 Until, when the eye of guidance was opened for him حَتَّى إذَا انْفَتَحَ لَهُ بَصَرُ الْهُدَىِ 15 16 And the clouds of blindness were dispelled وَتَقَشَّعَتْ عَنْهُ سَحَائِبُ الْعَمَىِ 16 17 He reckoned that through which he had wronged himself أَحْصَى مَا ظَلَمَ بِهِ نَفْسَهُِ 17 18 And reflected upon that in which he had opposed his Lord. وَفَكَّرَ فِيمَا خَالَفَ بِهِ رَبَّهُ 18 19 He saw his vast disobedience as vast فَرَأَى كَبِيْرَ عِصْيَانِهِ كَبِيْراًِ 19 20 And his great opposition as great. وَجَلِيلَ مُخالَفَتِهِ جَلِيْلاً 20 21 So turned to Thee, hoping in Thee فَأَقْبَلَ نَحْوَكَ مُؤَمِّلاً لَكَ 21 22 And ashamed before Thee مُسْتَحْيِيَاً مِنْكَ 22 23 And he directed his beseeching toward Thee, having trust in Thee وَوَجَّهَ رَغْبَتَهُ إلَيْكَ ثِقَةً بِكَ 23 24 He repaired to Thee in his longing with certitude فَأَمَّكَ بِطَمَعِهِ يَقِيناًِ 24 25 And he went straight to Thee in fear with sincerity. وَقَصَدَكَ بِخَوْفِهِ إخْلاَصَاً 25 26 His longing was devoid of every object of longing but Thee قَدْ خَلاَ طَمَعُهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَطْمُوعٍ فِيهِ غَيْرَكَ 26 27 And his fright departed from every object of fear but Thee وَأَفْرَخَ رَوْعُهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَحْذُورٍ مِنْهُ سِوَاكَ 27 28 So he stood before Thee pleading فَمَثَلَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْـكَ مُتَضَرِّعـاًِ 28 29 His eyes turned toward the ground in humbleness وَغَمَّضَ بَصَرَهُ إلَى الأرْضِ مُتَخَشِّعَاًى 29 30 His head bowed before Thy might in lowliness وَطَأطَأَ رَأسَهُ لِعِزَّتِكَ مُتَذَلِّلاً 30 31 He revealed to Thee in meekness those secrets of his which Thou knowest better than he وَأَبَثَّكَ مِنْ سِرِّهِ مَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنْهُ خُضُوعاًِ 31 32 He numbered for Thee in humility those sins of his which Thou countest better than he وَعَدَّدَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ مَا أَنْتَ أَحْصَى لَهَا خُشُوعاً 32 33 He sought help from Thee before the dreadful into which he has fallen in Thy knowledge وَاسْتَغَاثَ بِكَ مِنْ عَظِيمِ مَا وَقَعَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِكَ 33 34 And the ugly which has disgraced him in Thy judgement وَقَبِيحِ مَا فَضَحَهُ فِي حُكْمِكَِ 34 35 The sins whose pleasures have turned their backs and gone مِنْ ذُنُوبٍ أدْبَرَتْ لَذَّاتُهَا فَذَهَبَتْ 35 36 And whose evil consequences have stayed and stuck fast وَأَقَامَتْ تَبِعَاتُهَا فَلَزِمَتْ 36 37 He will not deny Thy justice, my God, if Thou punishest him لاَ يُنْكِرُ يَا إلهِي عَدْلَكَ إنْ عَاقَبْتَهُ 37 38 Nor will he consider Thy pardon great if Thou pardonest him and hast mercy upon him وَلاَ يَسْتَعْظِمُ عَفْوَكَ إنْ عَفَوْتَ عَنْهُ وَرَحِمْتَهُ 38 39 For Thou art the Generous Lord for whom the forgiveness of great sins is nothing great! لأَنَّكَ الرَّبُّ الْكَرِيمُ الَّذِي لاَ يَتَعَاظَمُهُ غُفْرَانُ الذَّنْبِ الْعَظِيم 39 40 O God, so here I am: I have come to Thee اللَّهُمَّ فَهَا أَنَا ذَا قَدْ جِئْتُكَ 40 41 Obeying Thy command, for Thou hast commanded supplication مُطِيعاً لأَِمْرِكَ فِيمَا أَمَرْتَ بِهِ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ 41 42 And asking the fulfillment of Thy promise, for Thou hast promised to respond مَتَنَجِّزاً وَعْدَكَ فِيمَا وَعَدْتَ بِهِ مِنَ الإِجَابَةِ 42 43 Thou hast said, "Supplicate Me and I will respond to you" إِذْ تَقُولُ :اُدْعُونى أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ 43 44 O God, so bless Muhammad and his Household اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ 44 45 Meet me with Thy forgiveness just as I have met Thee with my confession وَالْقَنِي بِمَغْفِـرَتِكَ كَمَا لَقِيتُكَ بِـإقْرَارِي 45 46 Lift me up from the fatal infirmities of sins just as I have let myself down before Thee وَارْفَعْنِي عَنْ مَصَارِعِ الذُّنُوب كَمَا وَضَعْتُ لَكَ نَفْسِي 46 47 And cover me with Thy covering just as Thou hast shown no haste to take vengeance on me وَاسْتُرْنِي بِسِتْرِكَ كَمَا تَأَنَّيْتَنِي عَنِ الانْتِقَامِ مِنِّي 47 48 O God, make firm my intention to obey Thee اللَّهُمَّ وَثَبِّتْ فِي طَاعَتِكَ نِيَّتِيِْ 48 49 Strengthen my insight in worshipping Thee وَأَحْكِمْ فِي عِبَادَتِكَ بَصِيـرَتِي 49 50 Give me the success of works which will wash away the defilement of offenses وَوَفِّقْنِي مِنَ الأَعْمَالِ لِمَا تَغْسِلُ بِهِ دَنَسَ الْخَطَايَا عَنِّي 50 51 And take me when Thou takest me in the creed of Thy prophet Muhammad (upon him be peace). وَتَوَفَّنِي عَلَى مِلَّتِكَ وَمِلَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ إذَا تَوَفَّيْتَنِي 51 52 O God, I repent to Thee in this my station from my sins, great and small اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أَتُـوبُ إلَيْـكَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا مِنْ كَبَائِرِ ذُنُوبِي وَصَغَائِرِهَاَ 52 53 My evil deeds, inward and outward وَبَوَاطِنِ سَيِّئاتِي وَظَوَاهِرِهَا 53 54 My lapses, past and recent وَسَوَالِفِ زَلاَّتِي وَحَوَادِثِهَا 54 55 With the repentance of one who does not tell himself that he might disobey تَوْبَةَ مَنْ لا يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ بِمَعْصِيَةٍٍ 55 56 Or secretly think that he might return to an offense وَلاَ يُضْمِرُ أَنْ يَعُودَ فِي خَطِيئَةٍ 56 57 Thou hast said, my God, in the firm text of Thy Book وَقَدْ قُلْتَ يَا إلهِي فِي مُحْكَمِ كِتابِكَ 57 58 That Thou acceptest repentance from Thy servants إنَّكَ تَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِكَ 58 59 Pardonest evil deeds وَتَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئاتِ 59 60 And lovest the repenters وَتُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ 60 61 So accept my repentance as Thou hast promised فَاقْبَلْ تَوْبَتِي كَمَا وَعَدْتَ 61 62 Pardon my evil deeds as thou hast guaranteed وَاعْفُ عَنْ سَيِّئاتِي كَمَا ضَمِنْتَ 62 63 And make obligatory toward me Thy love as Thou hast stipulated وَأَوْجِبْ لِي مَحَبَّتَكَ كَمَا شَـرَطْتَ 63 64 To Thee, my Lord, belongs my stipulation that I will not return to what is disliked by Thee وَلَـكَ يَـا رَبِّ شَـرْطِي أَلاَّ أَعُودَ فِي مَكْرُوهِكَ 64 65 My guarantee that I will not go back to what Thou blamest وَضَمَانِي أَنْ لاَّ أَرْجِعَ فِي مَذْمُومِكَ 65 66 And my covenant that I will stay away from acts of disobedience to Thee وَعَهْدِي أَنْ أَهْجُرَ جَمِيعَ مَعَاصِيكََ 66 67 O God, Thou knowest better what I have done اللَّهُمَّ إنَّكَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا عَمِلْتُ 67 68 So forgive me what Thou knowest فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا عَلِمْتَ 68 69 And turn me through Thy power to what Thou lovest! وَاصْرِفْنِي بِقُدْرَتِكَ إلَى مَا أَحْبَبْتََ 69 70 O God, counted against me are claims that stay in my memory اللَّهُمَّ وَعَلَيَّ تَبِعَاتٌ قَدْ حَفِظْتُهُنَّ 70 71 And claims that I have forgotten وَتَبِعَاتٌ قَدْ نَسيتُهُنَّ 71 72 While all of them remain in Thy eye that does not sleep وَكُلُّهُنَّ بِعَيْنِكَ الَّتِي لاَ تَنَـامُ 72 73 And Thy knowledge that does not forget! وَعِلْمِكَ الَّذِي لاَ يَنْسَى 73 74 So compensate their owners فَعَوِّضْ مِنْهَا أَهْلَهَاً 74 75 Lighten their load upon me وَاحْطُطْ عَنِّيْ وِزْرَهَاً 75 76 Lift up their weight from me وَخَفِّفْ عَنِّيْ ثِقْلَهَاِ 76 77 And preserve me from approaching their like! وَاعْصِمْنِي مِنْ أَنْ أُقَارِفَ مِثْلَهَا 77 78 O God, but I can not be faithful to my repentance without Thy preservation اللَّهُمَّ وَإنَّهُ لاَ وَفَاءَ لِي بِالتَّوْبَةِ إلاَّ بِعِصْمَتِكَِ 78 79 Nor can I refrain from offenses without Thy strength وَلاَ اسْتِمْسَاكَ بِي عَنِ الْخَطَايَا إلاَّ عَنْ قُوَّتِكَ 79 80 So strengthen me with a sufficient strength فَقَوِّنِي بِقُوَّةٍ كَافِيَةٍ 80 81 And attend to me with a defending preservation! وَتَوَلَّنِي بِعِصْمَةٍ مَانِعَةٍِّ 81 82 O God, if any servant repents to Thee اللَّهُمَّ أَيُّما عَبْدٍ تَابَ إلَيْكَ 82 83 While in Thy knowledge of the Unseen he will break his repentance وَهُوَ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ فَاسِخٌ لِتَوْبَتِهِ 83 84 And return to his sin and offense وَعَائِدٌ فِي ذَنْبِهِ وَخَطِيئَتِهِ 84 85 I seek refuge in Thee lest I be like that! فَإنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أنْ أَكُوْنَ كَذلِكَ 85 86 So make this my repentance a repentance after which I will need no repentance فَاجْعَلْ تَوْبَتِي هَذِهِ تَوْبَةً لاَ أَحْتَاجُ بَعْدَهَا إلَى تَوْبَةٍ 86 87 And a repentance which will obligate the erasing of what has gone by تَوْبَةً مُوجِبَةً لِمَحْوِ مَا سَلَفَ 87 88 And safety in what remains! وَالسَّلاَمَةِ فِيمَـا بَقِيَ 88 89 O God, I ask pardon from Thee for my ignorance اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أَعْتَـذِرُ إلَيْـكَ مِنْ جَهْلِي 89 90 And I ask Thee to disregard my evil acts! وَأَسْتَـوْهِبُـكَ سُوْءَ فِعْلِيٌ 90 91 So join me to the shelter of Thy mercy through graciousness فَـاضْمُمْنِي إلَى كَنَفِ رَحْمَتِكَ تَطَوُّلاً 91 92 And cover me with the covering of Thy well-being through bounteousness! وَاسْتُرْنِي بِسِتْرِ عَافِيَتِكَ تَفَضُّلاً 92 93 O God, I repent to Thee from everything opposed to Thy will اللَّهُمَّ وَإنِّي أَتُوبُ إلَيْكَ مِنْ كُلِّ مَا خَالَفَ إرَادَتَكَ 93 94 Or far from Thy love - the thoughts of my heart أَوْ زَالَ عَنْ مَحَبَّتِـكَ مِنْ خَـطَرَاتِ قَلْبِي 94 95 The glances of my eye, the tales of my tongue وَلَحَـظَاتِ عَيْنِي، وَحِكَايَاتِ لِسَانِي 95 96 With a repentance through which each bodily part will by itself stay safe from ill consequences with Thee تَوْبَةً تَسْلَمُ بِهَا كُلُّ جَارِحَةٍ عَلَى حِيَالِهَا مِنْ تَبِعَاتِكَ 96 97 And remain secure from Thy painful penalties feared by transgressors! وَتَأْمَنُ مِمَّا يَخَافُ الْمُعْتَدُونَ مِنْ أَلِيْمِ سَطَوَاتِكَ 97 98 O God, so have mercy on my being alone before Thee اللَّهُمَّ فَارْحَمْ وَحْدَتِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ 98 99 The pounding of my heart in dread of Thee وَوَجِيبَ قَلْبِي مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ 99 100 The trembling of my limbs in awe of Thee! وَاضْطِرَابَ أَرْكَانِي مِنْ هَيْبَتِكَ 100 101 My sins, my God, have stood me in the station of degradation in Thy courtyard فَقَدْ أَقَامَتْنِي يَا رَبِّ ذُنُوبِي مَقَامَ الْخِزْيِ بِفِنَائِكَ 101 102 If I remain silent, none will speak for me فَإنْ سَكَتُّ لَمْ يَنْطِقْ عَنِّيْ أَحَدٌ 102 103 If I seek an intercessor, I am not worthy for intercession وَإنْ شَفَعْتُ فَلَسْتُ بِأَهْلِ الشَّفَاعَةِ 103 104 O God, bless Muhammad and his Household اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ 104 105 Make Thy generosity intercede for my offenses وَشَفِّعْ فِي خَطَايَـايَ كَرَمَكََ 105 106 Follow up my evil deeds with Thy pardon وَعُدْ عَلَى سَيِّئاتِي بِعَفْوِكَ 106 107 Repay me not with the punishment that is my proper repayment وَلاَ تَجْزِنِي جَزَائِي مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكََ 107 108 Spread over me Thy graciousness وَابْسُطْ عَلَيَّ طَوْلَكََ 108 109 Wrap me in Thy covering وَجَلِّلْنِي بِسِتْرِكَ 109 110 And do with me what is done by a mighty man, when a lowly slave pleads to him and he shows him mercy وَافْعَلْ بِي فِعْلَ عَزِيزٍ تَضَرَّعَ إلَيْهِ عَبْدٌ ذَلِيلٌ فَرَحِمَهُ 110 111 Or a rich man, when a poor slave submits himself and he raises him to wealth! أَوْ غَنِيٍّ تَعَرَّضَ لَهُ عَبْدٌ فَقِيرٌ فَنَعَشَهُ 111 112 O God, I have no protector against Thee, so let Thy might be my protector! اللَّهُمَّ لاَ خَفِيرَ لِي مِنْكَ فَلْيَخْفُرْنِيْ عِزُّكَ 112 113 I have no intercessor with Thee, so let Thy bounty be my intercessor! وَلاَ شَفِيعَ لِيْ إلَيْكَ فَلْيَشْفَعْ لِي فَضْلُكَ 113 114 My offenses have set me quaking, so let Thy pardon give me security! وَقَدْ أَوْجَلَتْنِي خَطَايَايَ فَلْيُؤْمِنِّي عَفْوُكَ 114 115 Not all that I have said rises up from my ignorance of my evil footsteps فَمَا كُلُّ مَا نَطَقْتُ بِهِ عَنْ جَهْلٍ مِنِّي بِسُوْءِ أَثَرِي 115 116 Or forgetfulness of my blameworthy acts in the past وَلاَ نِسيَانٍ لِمَا سَبَقَ مِنْ ذَمِيمِ فِعْلِي 116 117 But in order that Thy heaven and those within it وَلكِنْ لِتَسْمَعَ سَمَاؤُكَ وَمَنْ فِيْهَـا 117 118 And Thy earth and those upon it may hear the remorse which I have professed to Thee وَأَرْضُكَ وَمَنْ عَلَيْهَا مَا أَظْهَرْتُ لَكَ مِنَ النَّدَمَِِ 118 119 And the repentance through which I have sought asylum with Thee وَلَجَـأْتُ إلَيْكَ فِيـهِ مِنَ التَّوْبَـةِ 119 120 Then perhaps one of them, through Thy mercy, may show mercy upon my evil situation فَلَعَـلَّ بَعْضَهُمْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَرْحَمُنِي لِسُوءِ مَوْقِفِيَ 120 121 Or be seized by tenderness for my evil state أَوْ تُدْرِكُهُ الرِّقَّةُ عَلَيَّ لِسُوءِ حَالِي 121 122 There may come from him for my sake a supplication to which Thou givest ear more than to my supplication فَيَنَالَنِي مِنْهُ بِدَعْوَة هِيَ أَسْمَعُ لَدَيْكَ مِنْ دُعَائِي 122 123 Or an intercession surer with Thee than my intercession أَوْ شَفَاعَـةٍ أَوْكَدُ عِنْـدَكَ مِنْ شَفَاعَتِي 123 124 Through which I may be delivered from Thy wrath and attain to Thy good pleasure! تَكُونُ بِهَا نَجَاتِي مِنْ غَضَبِكَ وَفَوْزَتِي بِرِضَاكََ 124 125 O God, if remorse is a repentance toward Thee اللَّهُمَّ إنْ يَكُنِ النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةً إلَيْكَ 125 126 Then I am the most remorseful of the remorseful! فَأَنَا أَنْدَمُ اْلنَّادِمِينَ 126 127 If refraining from disobedience is a turning back to Thee وَإنْ يَكُنِ التَّرْكُ لِمَعْصِيَتِكَ إنَابَةًَ 127 128 Then I am the first of those who turn back! فَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُنِيبينََ 128 129 If praying for forgiveness alleviates sins وَإنْ يَكُنِ الاسْتِغْفَارُ حِطَّةً لِلذُّنُوبِ 129 130 Surely I am one of those who pray for Thy forgiveness! فَإنِّي لَكَ مِنَ الْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ 130 131 O God, as Thou hast commanded repentance اللَّهُمَّ فَكَمَا أَمَرْتَ بِالتَّوْبَةِ 131 132 And guaranteed acceptance وَضَمِنْتَ الْقَبُولَ 132 133 As Thou hast urged supplication, and promised to respond وَحَثَثْتَ عَلَى الدُّعَـاءِ، وَوَعَدْتَ الإجَابَةََ 133 134 So also bless Muhammad and his Household, accept my repentance, فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَاقْبَلْ تَوْبَتِيَ 134 135 And return me not to the returning place of disappointment in Thy mercy! وَلاَ تَرْجِعْنِي مَرْجِعَ الخَيْبَةِ مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ 135 136 Surely Thou art Ever-turning toward the sinners إنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ عَلَى الْمُذْنِبِينَ 136 137 All-compassionate toward the offenders who turn back! وَالرَّحِيمُ لِلْخَاطِئِينَ الْمُنِيبِينَ 137 138 O God, bless Muhammad and his Household just as Thou hast guided us by him! اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ كَمَا هَدَيْتَنَا بِهِ 138 139 Bless Muhammad and his Household just as Thou hast rescued us through him!! وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ كَمَا اسْتَنْقَذْتَنَا بِهِ 139 140 Bless Muhammad and his Household وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ 140 141 With a blessing that will intercede for us on the Day of Resurrection صَلاَةً تَشْفَعُ لَنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ 141 142 The day of neediness toward Thee! وَيَوْمَ الْفَاقَةِ إلَيْكَ 142 143 Thou art powerful over everything إنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ 143 144 And that is easy for Thee! وَهُوَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ 144 |
