Dua Kumayl The author of Mafatih al-Jinan says: “This is one of the famous supplications. 'Allamah Majlisi says that it is the best of all supplications, which Amir al-Muminin Ali taught to Kumayl, who was one of his select disciples. It is recited during nights of the middle of Sha'ban and every Thursday evening. It is useful for protecting against the evil of enemies, for opening the gate of one's daily bread and for forgiveness of sins." 1 In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ 1 2 O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy, which “..embraces all things” (7:156), 2 3 And by Your strength, through which You dominate all things, 3 4 And toward which all things are humble 4 5 And before which all things are lowly; 5 6 And by Your invincibility through which You overwhelm all things, 6 7 And by Your might, which nothing can resist; 7 8 And by Your tremendousness, which has filled all things; 8 9 by Your force, which towers over all things; 9 10 And by Your face, which subsists after the annihilation of all things, 10 11 And by Your Names, which have filled the foundations of all things; 11 12 And by Your knowledge, which encompasses all things; 12 13 And by the light of Your face, through which all things are illumined! O my Protector! 46 47 How many ugly things You have concealed! 47 48 How many burdensome tribulations You have abolished! 48 49 And how many stumbles You have prevented! 49 50 And how many ordeals You have repelled! 50 51 And how much beautiful praise, for which I was unworthy, You have spread abroad! 51 52 O Allah, my tribulation is tremendous, 52 53 And my bad state is excessive, 53 54 And my acts are inadequate, 54 55 And my fetters have tied me down, 55 56 And my far-fetched hopes have held me back from my gain 56 57 And this world with its delusions, my own soul with its offences and my delay have deceived me. 57 58 O my Master! So I ask You by Your might not to let my evil works and acts veil my supplication from You, 58 59 And not to disgrace me through the hidden things You know of my secrets 59 60 And not to hasten me to punishment for what I have done in private: 60 61 My evil acts in secrecy and my misdeeds 61 62 And my continuous negligence and my ignorance 62 63 And my manifold passions and my forgetfulness. 63 64 And by Your might, O Allah, be kind to me in all states 64 65 And be gracious to me in all affairs! 65 66 My God and my Lord! Have I any but You from whom to ask removal of my affliction and regard for my affairs! إِلَهِي وَرَبِّي مَن لِّي غَيْرُكَ أَسْأَلُهُ كَشْفَ ضُرِّي وَالْنَّظَرَ فِي أَمْرِي! 66 67 My God and my Protector! You put into effect through me a decree in which I followed the caprice of my own soul 67 68 And did not remain wary of adorning my enemy. 68 69 So he deluded me through my soul's caprice and therein destiny favoured him 69 70 So, in what was put into effect through me in that situation, I transgressed some of Your statutes 70 71 And disobeyed some of Your commands. 71 72 So Yours is the argument against me in all of that 72 73 I have no argument in what Your destiny put into effect through me therein 73 74 nor in what Your decree and Your tribulation imposed upon me. 74 75 Now I have come to You, My God, after my shortcoming and my immoderation toward myself, وَقَدْ أَتَيْتُكَ يَا إِلَهِي بَعْدَ تَقْصِيرِي وَإِسْرَافِي عَلَى نَفْسِي 75 76 Proffering my excuse, regretful, مُعْتَذِرًا نَّادِمًا، 76 77 Broken, apologizing, مُّنْكَسِرًا مُّسْتَقِيلاً 77 78 Asking forgiveness, repenting, مُّسْتَغْفِرًا مُّنِيبًا، 78 79 Acknowledging, submissive, confessing. 79 80 I find no place to flee from what occurred through me, 80 81 Nor any place of escape to which I may turn in my affairs, 81 82 Other than Your acceptance of my excuse and Your entering me into the compass of Your mercy. 82 83 O Allah, so accept my excuse, 83 84 Have mercy upon the severity of my affliction 84 85 And release me from the tightness of my fetters, 85 86 My Lord, have mercy upon the weakness of my body, the thinness of my skin and the frailty of my bones. 86 87 O Thou who gave rise to my creation, to the remembrance of me, to the nurture of me, to goodness toward me and to nourishment on me, 87 88 Bestow upon me for the sake of Your having given rise [to me] with generosity and Your previous goodness to me! 88 89 O Allah, my Master and my Lord! 89 90 Can You see Yourself tormenting me with Your fire after I have professed Your Unity 90 91 And after the knowledge of You my heart has embraced, 91 92 And the remembrance of You my tongue has constantly mentioned 92 93 And the love of You to which my mind has clung, 93 94 And after the sincerity of my confession and my supplication, humble before Your lordship? 94 95 Far be it from You! You are more generous than that You should squander him whom You have nurtured, 95 96 Or banish him whom You have brought nigh, 96 97 Or drive away him whom You have given an abode 97 98 Or submit to tribulation him whom You have spared and shown mercy. 98 99 Would that I knew, my Master, My God and my Protector, 99 100 Whether You will give the Fire dominion over faces fallen down prostrate before Your Tremendousness, 100 101 And over tongues voicing sincerely the profession of Your Unity and giving thanks to You in praise, 101 102 And over hearts acknowledging Your Divinity through verification, 102 103 And over minds encompassing knowledge of You until they have become humble 103 104 And over bodily members speeding to the places of Your worship in obedience and beckoning for Your forgiveness in submission. 104 105 No such opinion is held of You! Nor has such been reported - thanks to Your bounty — concerning You, 106 107 And You know my weakness before a little of this world's tribulations and punishments, 107 108 And before those ordeals which befall its inhabitants, 108 109 Even though it is a tribulation and ordeal whose stay is short, whose subsistence is but little and, whose period is but fleeting. 109 110 So how can I endure the tribulations of the next world and the great ordeals that occur within it? فَكَيْفَ احْتِمَاِلي لِبَلآءِ الآخِرَةِ وَجَلِيلِ وُقُوعِ الْمَكَارِهِ فِيهَا! 110 111 For it is a tribulation whose period is long, whose station endures and whose sufferers are given no respite, وَهُوَ بَلآءٌ تَطُولُ مُدَّتُهُ، وَيَدُومُ مَقَامُهُ، وَلا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْ أَهْلِهِ 111 112 Since it only occurs as a result of Your wrath, Your vengeance and Your anger, 112 113 And these cannot be withstood by the heavens and the earth. 113 114 O Master, so what about me?! 114 115 For I am Your weak, lowly, base, wretched and miserable slave. 115 116 My God! My Lord! My Master! My Protector! 116 117 For which things would I complain to You? 117 118 And for which of them would I lament and weep? 118 119 For the pain and severity of chastisement? لِأَلِيمِ الْعَذَابِ وَشِدَّتِهِ! 119 120 Or for the length and period of tribulation? أَمْ لِطُولِ الْبَلآءِ وَمُدَّتِهِ! 120 121 So if You take me to the punishments with Your enemies, فَلَئِن صَيَّرْتَنِي لِلْعُقُوبَاتِ مَعَ أَعْدَآئِكَ 121 122 And gather me with the people of Your tribulation 122 123 And separate me from Your friends and saints, 123 124 Then suppose, My God, my Master, my Protector and my Lord that I am able to endure Your chastisement, 124 125 How can I endure separation from You? 125 126 And suppose that I am able to endure the heat of Your fire, 126 127 How can I endure not gazing upon Your generosity? 127 128 Or how can I dwell in the Fire while my hope is Your pardon? 128 129 So by Your might, my Master and my protector, I swear sincerely, if You leave me with speech, 129 130 I will lament to You from the midst of the Fire's inhabitants with lamentation of the hopeful; 130 131 I will cry to You with the cry of those crying for help; 131 132 I will weep to You with the weeping of the bereft; 132 133 And I will call to You, Where art Thou, O Sponsor of the believers, 133 134 O Goal of the hopes of Your knowers, 134 135 O Aid of those who seek assistance, 135 136 O Friend of the hearts of the sincere 136 137 And O God of all the world's inhabitants! 137 138 Can You see Yourself — Glory be to You My God, and Yours is the praise — hearing within the Fire the voice of a slave surrendered to 138 139 Imprisoned there because of his violations, 139 140 Tasting the flavour of its torment because of his disobedience, 140 141 And confined within its levels because of his sin and crime, 141 142 While he laments to You with the lament of one hopeful for Your mercy, 142 143 And calls to You with the tongue of those who profess Your Unity 143 144 And entreats You by Your lordship! 144 145 My Protector, so how should he remain in the chastisement, while he has hope for Your previous clemency? 145 146 Or how should the Fire cause him pain while he expects Your bounty and mercy? 146 147 Or how should its flames burn him, while You hear his voice and see his place? 147 148 Or how should its groaning encompass him, while You know his weakness? 148 149 Or how should he be convulsed among its levels, while You know his sincerity? 149 150 Or how should its keepers torture him while he calls out to You, “O Lord”? 150 151 Or how should he have hope of Your bounty in freeing him from it, while You abandon him within it? 151 152 Far be it from You! That is not what is expected of You, 152 153 Nor what is well-known of Your bounty, 153 154 Nor it is similar to the goodness and kindness Thou hast shown to those who profess Your Unity. 154 155 So I declare with certainty that were it not for what You have decreed concerning the chastisement of Your deniers 155 156 And what You have foreordained concerning the everlasting home of those who stubbornly resist, 156 157 You would make the Fire, all of it, coolness and safety, 157 158 And no one would have a place of rest or abode within it. 158 159 But You —holy are Your Names—hast sworn that You will fill it with the unbelievers, 159 160 Both Jinn and men together, 160 161 And that You will place those who stubbornly resist therein forever. 161 162 And You — majestic is Your eulogy— said at the beginning and were gracious through kindness as a favour, 162 163 “What? Is he who has been believer like unto him who has been ungodly? They are not equal” (32:18) 163 164 My God and my Master! So I ask You by the power You have apportioned 164 165 And by the decision which You have determined and imposed and through which You have overcome him toward whom it has been put into 165 166 That You forgive me in this night and at this hour 166 167 Every offence I have committed, 167 168 And every sin I have performed, 168 169 And every ugly thing I have concealed 169 170 And every folly I have enacted 170 171 Whether I have hidden or announced it, 171 172 Or I have concealed it or manifested it 172 173 And every evil act which You have commanded the Noble Writers to record, 173 174 Those whom You have appointed to watch over what appears from me 174 175 And whom You have made, along with my bodily members, witness against me. 175 176 And “You were Yourself the Watcher” (5:117) over me from behind them, 176 177 And the Witness of what is hidden from them 177 178 But through Your mercy You concealed it وَبِرَحْمَتِكَ أَخْفَيْتَهُ، 178 179 And through Your bounty You veiled it. 179 180 [And I ask You] that You bestow upon me an abundant share of every good You send down, وَأَنْ تُوَفِّرَ حَظِّي مِن كُلِّ خَيْرٍ تُنْزِلُهُ، 180 181 Or kindness You confer, أَوْ إِحْسَانٍ تُفْضِلُهُ 181 182 Or goodness You unfold, أَوْ بِرٍّ تَنْشُرُهُ، 182 183 Or provision You spread out, أَوْ رِزْقٍ تَبْسُطُهُ 183 184 Or sin You forgive, أَوْ ذَنْبٍ تَغْفِرُهُ 184 185 Or error You cover. 185 186 My Lord! My Lord! My Lord! 186 187 My God! My Master! My Protector! Owner of my bondage! 187 188 O He in whose hand is my forelock! 188 189 O He who knows my affliction and my misery! 189 190 O He who is aware of my poverty and indigence! 190 191 My Lord! My Lord! My Lord! 191 192 I ask You by Your Truth and Your Holiness 192 193 And the greatest of Your Attributes and Names, 193 194 That You make my times in the night and the day inhabited by Your remembrance, 194 195 And joined to Your service وَبِخِدْمَتِكَ مَوْصُولَةً، 195 196 And my works acceptable to You, 196 197 So that my works and my litanies may all be a single litany 197 198 And my occupation with Your service everlasting. 198 199 My Master! O He upon whom I depend! 199 200 O He to whom I complain about my states! 200 201 My Lord! My Lord!
